Signs an Older Parent May Need Help at Home

Adult children often notice small changes long before a health crisis makes the need for support obvious. A parent may skip meals, let mail pile up, or seem more withdrawn during phone calls. None of these signs alone is cause for alarm, but together they can point toward a need for additional support at home.

Common signs worth paying attention to include changes in personal hygiene or grooming, a home that feels less tidy than usual, missed medication schedules, unexplained bruises or a new hesitance to walk confidently, and a noticeable dip in energy or mood during visits and calls.

Financial changes can also be a signal. Unpaid bills, unfamiliar purchases, or confusion about routine finances sometimes accompany the same challenges that make daily tasks harder to manage independently.

Social withdrawal is another common indicator. A parent who used to enjoy regular activities, church, or time with friends may begin declining invitations or spending most of the day alone. Loneliness and isolation can affect both emotional wellbeing and physical health over time.

If you are noticing several of these signs, it may be time for an honest, caring conversation about what additional support could look like. Many families find it helpful to start with a small step, such as companionship a few hours a week, rather than a major change all at once.
